Thumbnails Cleaner helps you keep your WordPress installation tidy by removing and regenerating thumbnails.
You can control all functions through the plugins’ main page found under “Tools”. You can:
- Analyze your uploads directory, giving you an overview how many original files and thumbnails there are.
- Clean thumbnails which means deleting them while keeping the original files.
- Restore thumbnails to start out with a clean uploads directory. This function requires the plugin Regenerate Thumbnails.
- Create backups of your uploads directory to keep your files safe in the unlikely event that there is a problem.
- Restore backups in case you have lost a file that was not supposed to be deleted.

How to install
- Install Thumbnail Cleaner either through WordPress’ native plugin installer found under Plugins > Install or copy the thumbnail-cleaner folder into the /wp-content/plugins/ directory of your WordPress installation.
- Activate the plugin in the plugin section of your admin interface.
- Go to Tools > Thumbnail Cleaner to start cleaning up your WordPress installation.

I am using WordPress version 6.1.1. The plugin correctly cleared all thumbnails (24 thousand in a few minutes). Despite the fact that the plugin has not been updated for a long time, it still works well. I thank the developer.

Follow the instructions and it will work like a charm. I used this plugin on a 5.5 GB uploads folder containing 49193 images. Thanks, author!
